What does a Registered Massage Therapist Do?

  • As a primary health care professional, RMT’s are trained to assess, treat prevent dysfunction, injury, pain and physical disorders of the soft tissues and joints of the body;
  • RMT’s utilize manual and physical methods to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function, to relieve pain and promote health;
  • RMT’s practice a wide variety of treatment modalities, including but not limited to:
    • Manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue manipulation and joint mobilizations;
    • Active therapy such as strengthening, stretching and other rehabilitative services;
    • Hydrotherapy and water therapy;
    • Postural exercise, ergonomics and patient education.

What is the difference between Registered Massage Therapy and a spa massage?

  • A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in BC is a regulated health professional recognized under the provincial Health Professions Act.
  • All RMT’s have successfully completed a minimum of two years post-secondary education in clinical applications of health sciences in massage therapy settings. RMT’s are required to successfully satisfy provincial examination standards in practical scenario applications, anatomy and physiology, general sciences, ethics and professional development.
  • RMTs are subject to:
    • CMTBC’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
    • The requirements of the Health Professions Act and regulations made under the Act.
    • Standards of professional conduct.
    • CMTBC’s quality assurance program, which ensures ongoing professional currency and development.
    • By law (the Massage Therapists Regulation), only RMTs registered with CMTBC may refer to themselves by using one or more of the following professional titles: “massage therapist”, “registered massage therapist” (or “RMT”), “massage practitioner”, or “registered massage practitioner”.

When should I see a RMT?

  • A RMT is a primary health care professional committed to every aspect of health and pain-free functioning of the body.
  • Some of the reasons why you would go see a RMT include:
    • Assessment and treatment of injuries related to sports, physical activity, car accidents, slips and falls, unknown physical pain;
    • Aid in recovery from physical activities;
    • Therapeutic exercise instruction to assist in rehabilitation of physical limitations, postural imbalances or injury;
    • Assist in maintaining health and function of muscles and soft tissues;
    • Decrease symptoms of chronic pain of systemic conditions;
    • Reduce symptoms of headaches, migraines, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis,
    • Mental health including depression, anxiety, PTSD;
    • Pregnancy and post cancer care;
    • Overall relaxation and well-being.

  • Yes! We now have direct billing for many of the common extended health benefit plans. Inquire with us to see if you are covered for direct billing.
  • Extended Health benefits normally follow the Jan-Dec calendar cycle so don’t forget to use up your massage therapy benefits before the end of the year!
